Road Rash - Burn the roads against the Cops
A forerunner of such violent games as the Grand Theft Auto series, Road Rash is a rousingly good combat racing motorcycle game that encourages players to punch, kick, and club their opponents off the twisting, turning tracks.

You'd better come wearing your tough-guy boots if you hope to win this race. Extreme arcade racing has never been so rough, as you'll have to kick, beat, punch, and maul your opponents with chains, clubs, sticks, and other brutal weaponry. Of course, your opponents can and will fight back, sometimes going so far as to put you on a hit list for later group pummeling.

Not only that, you've got to watch out for the fuzz! The cops are out in full force setting up road blocks, chasing you on motorcycles, and hauling you off to jail if you're unfortunate enough to take a spill in front an officer. Pick your racer (the gamut runs from punks to jocks), and then head off to Der Panzer Klub, where you can talk to fellow riders, sign up for a race, or purchase a new ride.

You can choose between rat bikes, sport bikes, and super bikes, but you'll need to win plenty of races to earn enough cash for an upgrade.

Paced admirably by a hard driving soundtrack, the game strikes a nice balance between hitting and racing, and the controls are smooth and easy to use. Players can win money for bike upgrades by winning (or simply placing in) races on five different courses: Sierra Nevada, Pacific Coast, Redwood Forest, Palm Desert, and Grass Valley. The frame rate could use a boost to make the scrolling a bit smoother, but the players and bikes look good, there's ample roadside and background detail (including cows, trees, mountains, and slippery sand), and the game itself remains a pleasure long after the newness has worn off.

Max & The Magic Marker

Max & the Magic Marker, developed by Press Play, is a platform game that brings action to the puzzle world. One day Max is sent a marker in the mail. No questions asked, Max begins drawing a monster and to his surprise the monster comes to life and immediately disappears into one of Max's drawings. Max & the Magic Marker is a small boy's quest to find the evil monster that he created and capture him once and for all. This game brings user based creativity and imagination to solve what start off as simple and straightforward puzzles. Max's journey is short, but tedious. Let's find out how he fares.

First Impressions

After launching Max & the Magic Marker, a setup menu loads asking for your screen resolution, video setting, and control setting preferences. Having to choose from Fastest, Fast, Simple, Good, Best, or Fantastic, I went with the latter and hoped for best. Max & the Magic Marker starts off with a mini introduction via cartoon drawing that explains what is going on with Max and his marker. There are three worlds that Max needs to beat, and there are five levels to each world. The first few levels are extremely straightforward and simple, but as you progress the levels become more difficult. There are little green guys that give you hints throughout the first few levels. Even after the first world I noticed that there are street signs or drawings that hint towards what needs to be done for you to keep going. Max's marker needs ink, preferably known as "that orange juice stuff". Once you have enough juice you can design whatever contraptions you think you need in order to accomplish the task at hand. One cool feature I liked was the fact that you could Freeze Time. On multiple occasions doing so saved Max's life, but there were several other notable times in which it was necessary to use in order to finish. Since the first few levels are fairly simple, you are allowed to adjust to the tools at hand in order to use them to their fullest ability. There were a few occasions however in which this game became quite frustrating and annoying. Actually I found myself screaming at the computer screen twice, once was when the game crashed and I was near the end of the level, and the second time was when I reopened Max & the Magic Marker to find out I hand to start from the very beginning of that same level. Not to mention each level takes about 20 minutes to complete if you are taking your time trying to get all of the "goodies".

Singleplayer

Max starts off chasing after the evil monster only for him to dissipate into thin air. Throughout each level there are three items to collect. The orange juice for Max's magic marker that allows him to draw for whatever the circumstance. There are collectible whitish globes that are in each level, but I have realized that you don't need all the globes to go onto the next level you just need enough to light up the light bulb in the top left of the screen. There are also "rare" collectible black globes of what looks to be ink throughout each level. There are usually around four or five of these black globes per level and usually only two or three of them are out in the open. It can be very hard to find all of them if you don't already know where they are hidden. Sometimes even the visible ones are out in the middle of nowhere and it seems like you don't have enough ink to get there. Whenever you freeze time you will see that the graphics will change to a cartoonish skit of where you are. When time is frozen you can draw, erase, or just sit there in amusement. As you progress through each level there are checkpoints that are in the form of signs that read "Max". At each checkpoint the evil purple monster will vacuum up your magic orange ink. They do this so the game won't as easy, but they will never leave you out to dry and you'll always have enough juice to beat the level. The ways in which you die are simple to understand, but sometimes hard to follow. It's not as easy as it looks to not fall in the water when you are surfing on the backs of whales. When you beat a level next to your completion time there is a gold ribbon time which I am guessing is the time to beat, I have not and probably not ever beat that time considering I take about 20 minutes and the goal is 3 or 4 minutes. Even though you can't change the difficulty of the worlds, you can choose to play with an "unlimited marker". I found Max & the Magic Marker to be fun and fuel my mind, but there were just time of complete agony and sorrow. Take for example the fact that some of the checkpoints that were set up were so far apart, that if you died you had to take all that time to regain all the white globes that you lost. Not to mention that fact that if your game crashes you have to start over on that level. I did however like the very idea behind this game. I liked having the ability to essentially do whatever I thought I should do, the ability to create and imagine.

Final Thoughts

Overall Max & the Magic Marker did what it was developed to do, nothing more nothing less. The game introduced and combined creativity and imagination with puzzles and mind bogglers. It was an action adventure game, but at the same time it was a thinking game. Max & the Magic Marker isn't your traditional drawing crayon game. You had to think quick, move quickly, and imagine quickly. In the end, the game was enjoyable. Whenever I found myself annoyed or frustrated I would exit the game, and within a couple hours I would find myself wanting to play and wanting to figure out how. Aside from the few discrepancies that occurred, Max & the Magic Marker was a great platform game and was in general a decent game at best. For those of you who like action-adventure puzzle-solving games Max & the Magic Marker is a game for you. The game can be easily beaten in a couple of days, and it is a good time that could be worth your while.

Como se decía previamente, todo el control del juego se realiza con apenas tres botones, más un cuatro para cambiar de arma. Con uno se lanzan grandas, con otro se dispara y el tercero sirve para extender el brazo biónico. Este es el elemento más importante del juego, pues si bien al principio su uso se limita a que Nathan se balancee por el escenario de forma similar a Spiderman, más adelante se abre la posibilidad de agarrar barriles con él, lanzar a enemigos al vacío o, simplemente, cogerlos para usarlos de escudos humanos.

El brazo es muy versátil, si bien al principio cuesta un poco cogerle el truco a los balanceos y a las posibilidades que brinda. Poco a poco se va mejorando, a medida se obtienen objetos para tal fin, de la misma forma que Nathan va recogiendo diferentes armas y equipo que lo hacen más fiero ante sus enemigos. Las armas, que se cambian con una sencilla pulsación de botón y completamente en tiempo real, van desde bazokas, pasando por escopetas, láser o pistolas de ráfagas rápidas.

El desarrollo del juego se mantiene intacto, como no podía ser de otra forma. De este modo, Bionic Commando Rearmed presenta un cóctel de plataformas, acción y juego de habilidad. Se avanza lateralmente acabando con los enemigos que salen al paso, siendo indudablemente lo más importante el último punto, la habilidad: pasarse el juego sin derrotar a ningún enemigo tiene además premio en forma de logro en la versión Xbox 360, lo cual es una muestra más de la versatilidad del brazo biónico y del peso que tiene aprender a controlarlo de forma perfecta.

Y como en todo buen juego clásico, la dificultad no es algo que GRIN haya dejado al azar. Bionic Commando Rearmed es complicado, no tanto como el original, pero sí difícil. Superar cada una de las fases tiene su técnica y no digamos ya en las últimas, donde todo es frenético e implica máxima coordinación entre los saltos y los disparos. No es el primer juego que lleva esto al máximo nivel (Ikaruga es el estandarte ahora mismo en el Live Arcade), pero sí que consigue su propósito con bastante facilidad

La inteligencia artificial de los enemigos es, por tanto, más que respetable. No sólo los de apie, sino sobretodo los jefes finales, que si bien no están en la tradición de Capcom de bosses últra complicados, sí que tienen patrones de ataque bastante laboriosos y difíciles de tirar abajo. Para darle más variedad, no todas las fases del modo historia son exactamente iguales. Mientras que se avanza por el mapa de selección, pueden darse lugar varios enfrentamientos en los que la cámara se coloca en la zona superior y, como en reciente Commando 3, habrá que avanzar acabando con las bases enemigas hasta que un helicóptero rescate a los personajes.
